Four Great Rivers to Cross
by Patrick Mendoza, Ann
Strange Owl Raben
and Nico Strange Owl
This book is a great storytime
resource, that will appeal to all. These intriguing stories-from creation
accounts and the introduction of the horse to the present--chronicle the
history of the people we call the Cheyenne Indians. Offering a unique historical
perspective, they are told as seen through the eyes of Old Nam Shim (which
means grandfather) and a little girl called Shadow. This book was written
to dispell misconceptions about these and other Native peoples. Great reading
for Native American History studies as required by Colorado Law. Ideal
reading supplement to Western history, Colorado history, Cheyenne wars
or the anthropology of the Cheyenne people. Also a valuable resource for
multicultural units.
This a teachers workbook
for 3rd through 8th grade reading level. This book was design to teach
about the Cheyenne Culture through stories, activities, and vocabulary
to enhance Native American Studies. Publisher is Libraries Unlimited. ISBN

reading for any age. The mixture of cultural and historical stories provides

Songs of Sorrow
by Patrick Mendoza
Soft Cover
Song of Sorrow is a multicultural
history about the Sand Creek Massacre of November 29, 1864, beginning from
1820 and ending in 1878, that is rich in Cheyenne culture and religion.
The author spent seven years researching and interviewing the descendents
of victims and perpetrators of the massacre. He is a formally adopted Cheyenne
and an honoray Creek Indian and was recently honored by the Lakota people.
Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell wrote the foreword. Since this is a narrative
history, the reader will enjoy a refreshing new approach to learning history.
"..This book is extremely
well written. Mendoza is a historian who sings in his retelling of Sand
Creek...makes history relevant by bringing this story to the present."
--- Dr. Tom Noel, Chairman,
History Dept., Univ. of Colorado, Denver.
"...commendable job in
maintaining the "multicultural" viewpoint. Well suited for classroom use,
it should find a much wider readership, given the high profile nature of
the subject, together with a highly readable narrative. A book that belongs
in every Colorado library."
--- Jerry Keenan, Author
& Western Historian Colorado Libraries, Vol 21, #1, Spring, 1995.
"...did not rehash the
same old Sand Creek story but went to the people who knew the oral stories
of the Cheyenne..."
--- John Sipes, Jr., Southern
Cheyenne Tribal Historian/Plains Indian Consultant.
"Mendoza's telling is
powerful and exciting."
--- Angie Irons, True West
